A remake of the classic drama by Kuniko Mukoda, a leading screenwriter of the Showa period, and who Morita was an avowed fan of himself. Set in the late Showa period, the story follows four sisters who discover that their aging father had a mistress and a child, and how they live stoutly despite their various feelings, worries, and conflicts. The four sisters are played by Shinobu Otake, Hitomi Kuroki, Eri Fukatsu, and Kyoko Fukada, all of whom are among the best actresses of th eir generation. The film carefully captures the funny humorous side of women with complicated hearts and minds, while appearing on the surface to be heartwarming. While on the surface the film is heartwarming, it carefully captures the horror of women “women are scary” with Morita's unique humor, and as a result, attracted a large audience of middle-aged women. The film won many awards for its director, crew, and actresses.
